What We Do
From routine cleanings to complex oral surgery, every patient benefits from the academic research and advanced techniques pioneered right here at VCU.
Comprehensive oral health care provided by the nation's top dentists at affordable prices. Includes cleanings, exams, fillings, and preventive care for patients of every age.
Braces, Invisalign, and corrective alignment treatment from VCU-trained specialists. Patients like Dr. Tran's work describe results as "extremely attentive and professional."
Specialized care for infants, children, and teens in a gentle, family-friendly environment. VCU's pediatric residents train under nationally recognized faculty, so your child sees the best.
Extractions, dental implants, bone grafts, and complex surgical procedures performed by VCU's oral surgery residents and attending faculty in a hospital-grade setting.
Treatment for gum disease, gum grafts, and bone regeneration. VCU's periodontics program uses research-driven techniques developed within the school's own clinical studies.
Root canal therapy, crowns, bridges, dentures, and full-mouth rehabilitation. VCU's prosthodontics program is one of the oldest in the state, with faculty who literally wrote the textbooks.
Our Story
VCU Dental Care is an independent nonprofit organization that works in concert with Virginia Commonwealth University, VCU School of Dentistry and VCU Medical Center. It combines educational mission with expertise of top dentists to provide comprehensive oral health care at affordable prices.
The School of Dentistry was created in 1893 when the University College of Medicine opened with a dental department as one of its original divisions. That means every dentist, every resident, every specialist at VCU Dental Care carries forward over a century of teaching, research, and hands-on patient care. This isn't a private practice that opened last year. This is the institution that trains Virginia's dentists.
The organization provides both general and specialty private dental services and offers management oversight to all pre-doctoral and post-graduate clinical programs. That dual purpose — education and patient care — is what makes VCU Dental Care different. You get the latest techniques because our dentists are the ones developing them.
"I love working for VCU Dental Care because of the diversity within our community, the strong leadership within the company and the opportunity to welcome and meet new students each year."

Why VCU Dental Care
That's not a marketing claim — it's the structural advantage that shapes every appointment.
1893
The University College of Medicine opened with dentistry as an original division in 1893. Patients here benefit from teaching methods refined across three centuries of continuous practice.

Orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, oral pathology, prosthodontics, and advanced general dentistry — all in one building at 520 N. 12th Street.
VCU Dental Care is an independent nonprofit. Pricing is set to make care accessible for all Virginians, not to maximize revenue. That's why patients say the cost is "about half what a private office quoted."
Because this is a teaching institution, your treatment plan may be reviewed by residents and attending faculty together. More eyes means more thorough care — patients consistently call it "never rushed."
VCU faculty develop and publish dental research used nationwide. You get access to advanced treatment methods — bone grafts, implant protocols, gum regeneration — before they reach most private practices.
Pediatric dentistry for your kids, orthodontics for your teen, general care for you, prosthodontics for your parents — one location, one set of records, one institution your whole family trusts.

We're located at 520 N. 12th Street, Box 980566, Richmond, VA 23298-0566 — right in the VCU Medical Center campus in downtown Richmond. We're accessible by public transit and there's parking available in the VCU health system garages nearby.
Yes. As an independent nonprofit, VCU Dental Care sets prices to make oral health accessible — not to maximize profit. Patients regularly tell us our rates are about half what private offices charge. We accept most insurance plans and have financial assistance options for patients who need them. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
VCU Dental Care provides both faculty-led private practice services and educational clinical programs. In the private practice setting, you're treated by experienced, licensed dentists — many of whom are nationally recognized in their specialty. In the educational clinics, pre-doctoral or post-graduate residents provide care under direct faculty supervision. Either way, an attending dentist oversees your treatment. Many patients actually prefer the educational setting because multiple practitioners review their case, resulting in what patients call "more thorough care."
Our patients consistently describe the staff as "very positive" and say they're "treated with the utmost respect." Because our providers aren't on a production schedule like many private practices, appointments feel "never rushed" — there's time to explain every step, answer your questions, and make sure you're comfortable before proceeding. We also have sedation options available for procedures that require them.
Absolutely. We have a dedicated Pediatric Dentistry program for infants, children, and teens, plus general dentistry, orthodontics, and every other specialty for adults and seniors. Your entire family can receive care at one location — which means one set of records, one team that knows your family's oral health history, and no bouncing between offices for different needs.
Patients choose VCU Dental Care for superior clinical quality, attentive and friendly staff care, affordable options including free care programs, and convenient scheduling availability. No private practice in Richmond has 8 dental specialties, a 130-year teaching legacy, research-grade techniques, and nonprofit pricing all in one location. Our providers — Dr. Tran, Dr. Luke, Dr. Steadman, and many others — are consistently praised by name for the quality of their work.
